History & Identity

Created
Republic Act No. 4875, approved on 18 May 1967, separated Naga and other barrios and sitios of Kabasalan, then in Zamboanga del Sur, into a distinct and independent municipality named Naga.[9]

How it got its name

Local traditionOne local tradition, on the town's own site, says the name comes from a seven-headed dragon, a naga, believed to have lived among the rocks of Singkilon.[10]

Local traditionA second tradition says a Subano leader named Naga ruled his people long ago, and the place took his name.[10]

Local traditionA third tradition says the place was named for the many big narra trees, which locals call naga; the town page adds that nobody is certain which version is true.[10]

Its story

Naga was once the seat of a municipal district: an order of 21 October 1936 shifted the seat of the Municipal District of Kabasalan out of Naga and into Kabasalan.[11]

An executive order of 4 September 1964 created the municipality of Naga from barrios and sitios of Kabasalan, but the town would only begin to exist once its first officials were appointed and qualified and the Secretary of Finance had certified that it could pay its way.[12]

Republic Act 4875 then made Naga a municipality on 18 May 1967, still in Zamboanga del Sur.[9]

Since the creation of Zamboanga Sibugay in 2000, Naga has been one of the municipalities of that province.[13]

Timeline

  1. 1923

Sources differThe town's page says Naga began as a municipal district of Margosatubig in 1923; the 1936 order instead describes a Municipal District of Kabasalan with its seat at Naga.[11, 14]

  2. 21 October 1936

An order shifts the seat of the Municipal District of Kabasalan out of Naga and into Kabasalan, effective in November.[11]

  3. 1964 or 1965

Sources differThe town's own history page dates Executive Order 97 to 1965, while the order itself is dated 4 September 1964.[12, 14]

  4. 4 September 1964

Executive Order 97 creates the municipality of Naga in Zamboanga del Sur out of barrios and sitios of Kabasalan.[12]
