About this dataset
The official land area of every region, province, city and municipality of the Philippines from the Land Management Bureau's 2019 Masterlist of Land Areas, as the Philippine Statistics Authority publishes it with its 2024 population density. A barangay has no official land area in any national dataset: Scene measures the area inside its border on UN OCHA's map, says it is approximate, and divides its 2024 population by it.
How the figures were made: Official areas from the Land Management Bureau (DENR); barangay areas measured by Scene on the Earth's surface inside their borders.
What Scene adds: Every barangay's area, measured inside its border, and its density from that area; island groups' areas, added up from their regions.
What it holds
- Land area
- In square kilometres: official for a city, municipality, province or region; measured by Scene, and approximate, for a barangay.
- Population density
- People for every square kilometre of land: the PSA's figure for a city, municipality and up; Scene's for a barangay.

Definition: Total population defines as the sum of the household population and the institutional population, covering all persons living within a specific territory at a given reference time, including Filipinos in embassies or missions abroad. Land area is based on official cadastral surveys and geographic delineations used to measure territorial size, often reported in square kilometers or hectares via frameworks like the Philippine Standard Geographic Code (PSGC). Population Density defines as the number of people per unit of land area, usually expressed as persons per square kilometer. The percent change of population density measures the relative shift in the number of people per unit of land area between two reference periods. Method of Computation: See attached image Source of Basic Data: 2015 Census of Population, 2020 Census of Population and Housing, 2024 Census of Population Level of Disaggregation: Region, Province and Highly Urbanized City, and City/Municipality, 2019 Masterlist of Land Areas of Cities and Municipalities and Barangay Land Area Certifications for Embo Barangays from Land Management Bureau, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, and Land Area of the Special Geographic Area from Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources, and Energy, Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao Note/s: * - Population counts for the provinces exclude the counts of Highly Urbanized Cities ** - Not a Province/HUC a1/ - Land areas are based on the sum of uncontested, contested, gap, and overlap per city/municipality in the 2019 Masterlist of Land Areas provided by the Land Management Bureau, Department of Environment and Natural Resources (LMB, DENR), except for Special Geographic Area (SGA). The SGA was extracted from the mother barangays in the Province of Cotabato using the certification from the Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources, and Energy, under the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM). a2/ - Due to rounding off, the provincial totals may not be equal to the sum of the city/municipality figures. b1/ - Excludes 2,134 Filipinos in Philippine embassies, consulates, and missions abroad. b2/ - Excludes 2,098 Filipinos in Philippine embassies, consulates, and missions abroad. b3/ - Excludes 1,708 Filipinos in Philippine embassies, consulates, and missions abroad. 1/ - Excludes 10 barangays transferred to the City of Taguig, in accordance with the Supreme Court decision in General Register (G.R.) 235316 dated 01 December 2021. 2/ - Includes 10 barangays transferred from the City of Makati, in accordance with the Supreme Court decision in GR 235316 dated 01 December 2021. 3/ - Re-established into a region under Republic Act (RA) No. 12000 dated 11 June 2024. 4/ - Transferred province/highly urbanized city (HUC) under RA No. 12000; taken from Region VI - Western Visayas. 5/ - Transferred province under RA No. 12000; taken from Region VII - Central Visayas. 6/ - Created into a province through the division of the Province of Maguindanao under RA No. 11550; ratified on 17 September 2022. 7/ - Renamed from Interim Province; comprised of eight newly created municipalities under the Bangsamoro Autonomy Act Nos. 41 to 48 dated 15 September 2022; ratified on 13 April 2024.
