The story

Its heart is a legend, and the film calls it one. The dates and laws in it are documented.

Legend says this land was first called Jambangan, the land of flowers. That is the city's own telling. The city says the Subanon, the river people, lived along its banks.

Then the Sama and Bajau came by vinta and settled the shore. They called it Samboangan, after the sabuan, the pole that pushes a boat through shallow water. In 1521, Magellan's fleet sailed past and wrote of an island where people lived in boats.

June 23, 1635. The cornerstone of Fort Pilar is laid, the city's founding day. The Spaniards found Samboangan hard to say. So it became Zamboanga. The region took the name later. In 1975 its center was Jolo. In 1990 it was Western Mindanao.

Since 2001, the whole region carries one city's name: Zamboanga Peninsula. Flowers or boat pole? Which story did your lola tell you? Tell us in the comments.
