Government & Leaders

A mayor leads Leon. Its local laws, called ordinances, are passed by the Sangguniang Bayan (the municipal council), led by the vice mayor. The mayor, the vice mayor and the council's elected members serve three-year terms, and none may serve more than three in a row.[12, 13]

Everything listed for Leon in Now

How it got its name

The town was first called Camando. After it moved to Sitio Capan, the parish priest Fr. Agustin Castro proposed the name Leon after his home place in Spain; the local principalia had suggested Alexandria after Saint Catherine, and the higher government approved Leon.[10]

Its story

The town's own history says it was founded as Camando in 1730 with Bernabe Buncag as gobernadorcillo.[10]

Camando lay at the foot of a hill between the Sibalom River and a creek and flooded every year, so Fr. Agustin Castro urged a move; of three proposed sites the town chose Capan, a rice region, and the move was completed in 1866.[10]

The old stone church built from 1869 stands as a lasting reminder of the Spanish period, and the town calls it the biggest stone edifice on the island of Panay.[10]

In May 1942 the Free Government of Panay and Romblon, the only civil resistance the town says did not fall to the Japanese, was set up by Senator Tomas Confessor in the Bucari area.[10]
