History & Identity

How it got its name

Sources differThe town's own history says the name is taken from the Spanish word for ranch, since the land had been part of a large ranch belonging to Don Felipe Aguilar.[10]

Sources differThe province page also traces the name to a ranch but names the owner as a wealthy Spaniard called Rodrigo who married a local woman.[11]

Its story

Estancia began as a fishing village, originally part of the pueblo of Carles, settled by fishing families from Capiz including those of Latinu Rodriguez and Juan Magbanua.[10]

In 1846 a ranchería was set up and a church built; in 1847 Estancia was declared a pueblo.[10]

Under American rule Estancia was reduced to a barrio of Balasan; local leaders campaigned for its independence and it regained municipal status, with Antonio Somes as first municipal president.[10]
