History & Identity

Created
Buguey was made a barrio of Camalaniugan in 1901 and became a separate town again in 1915. The law or order for 1915 was not found.[9, 10]

How it got its name

Local traditionA Philippiniana Sacra article reports that the town's name is said to originate from bugay, an Ibanag word that describes a vessel that is shipwrecked or damaged.[9]

Local traditionA legend tied to a pirate raid in 1771 says the pirates' ships sank in rough waves and the people shouted navugay ira, "they capsized".[9]

Its story

Sources differIn the view of a Dominican historian who served in Cagayan, the civil town of Buguey dates from 1582.[9]

On 15 June 1596 the Dominicans set up the mission of San Vicente Ferrer de Buguey as a mission of Camalaniugan.[9]

Buguey was separated from Camalaniugan on 20 May 1623 and took Santa Ana as its patron saint.[9]

Local traditionIn 1771 pirates raided the coast near Buguey; local tradition says they carried off the town church bell and it sank with their boats.[9]

Part of old Buguey became the separate municipality of Gonzaga in 1918, and the barrios of Namunit and Mission were separated in 1963 to form Santa Teresita.[9]
