History & Identity

Created
Tudela was separated from Poro as its own town by a decree of the Consejo de Administracion Civil dated 20 May 1892, the same day the Governor-General signed the royal approval.[9]

How it got its name

Local traditionThe town's history page says the poblacion was first called Tag-anito, which it reads as a reference to early villagers' worship of anitos (spirits).[9]

Its story

Local traditionBefore the Spaniards came, oral tradition places two settlements on the island, Maktang and Tag-anito, the latter known for rice.[9]

Poro was declared a town on 16 January 1780 and a parish in 1847; Tag-anito later became a vista with its own school and casa tribunal.[9]

The decree of 20 May 1892 approved it, and the first election of municipal officials took place on 4 August 1892.[9]
