Release notes

Each release of the Atlas is built whole from its sources, checked before it goes live, and named by a fingerprint of its data, so the same sources always make the same release. This is the one you are reading.

The Archive and Now

They are released apart from the Atlas, each as a catalog of its own. The Archive: release e205c7180a5b, 323 pictures of 136 places, published October 9, 2026. Now: release b17b56f23649, 595 listings from October 1, 2026 to December 31, 2027, published October 9, 2026. Their holders, licences and sources: Data and credits.

What changed

  • A barangay now shows its population at the 2010 census where it is the same place as then: 39,266 of the 42,010. Where it does not, the page says why.
  • A city or municipality the 2024 census tables do not cover now shows its age structure at the 2020 census: 1,591 of them. Where no table fits, the page says so.
  • Every barangay now says that the PSA publishes no age structure below the city or municipality.
  • For 19 provinces and highly urbanized cities, the PSA's age table prints a both-sexes count for the two oldest groups that is not the sum of its men and women. The page now shows the sum, marks the figure as corrected by Scene, and shows what the PSA prints beside it.
  • The sitemap page and these notes now say what their totals hold: the 43,756 places are 18 regions, 82 provinces, the Special Geographic Area, 149 cities, 1,493 municipalities, 42,010 barangays and the 3 island groups.
  • Sources and methods gains two datasets, the 2010 barangay counts and the 2020 age structure, and the methods that make them.
  • A release whose own data checks find a problem no longer goes live: two new checks hold each town's 2010 barangay counts to the town, and every age structure to its totals.

Earlier releases

  • Every sentence of the histories was read again against its sources. 147 now say no more than their source does, the defence of Marawi in Lanao del Sur's history is corrected, and 17 are held back until a source confirms them.
  • A figure Scene works out from others, such as how long ago a town was founded, now says Calculated by Scene and shows the working.
  • An address that leads nowhere shows the page not found at once, and an old or mistyped address leads to the place's page.
  • A city with hundreds of numbered barangays, such as Manila, lists them by number in short runs, each still a link to its page, so the page opens faster.
  • Search, Compare and the random place were removed; the footer now carries Scene's four accounts.
  • Five town histories whose own pages stopped answering now link the Internet Archive's copy that holds every quote they cite: Catarman, Inopacan, Kabacan, Lantapan and Milaor.
  • Four lists of mayors before 2001 link their town's page at its new address; every quote was read again there.
  • Fifteen sentences that a town's history told twice on one page are now told once.
  • Six sources whose pages stopped answering (Cagayan's history and its Aggao fair, PHLPost's Tarlac release, Angeles City's profile and CvSU's history) now link the Internet Archive's copy that holds every quote they cite.

  • The sitemap now dates a page by the day what it says changed, so search engines know which pages to read again.
  • 47 sources whose pages moved now link their new address; every quote the Atlas cites from each was read again there.

  • A glossary of every word the Atlas explains, each at its own address; every ? card now leads to its word.
  • Data and credits: every source by the kind of licence it carries, and every photo with its author and licence.
  • These release notes, a sitemap of every region, province, city and municipality, a random place, a disclaimer and an accessibility statement, gathered in the footer.
  • Help now says how accurate the figures are and how to cite a page.
  • Malaybalay City's history links the Internet Archive's copy of the city's page, which moved; a line of Batanes' history drops a clause whose only source is gone.
  • Every photo's credit now links to its author's page on Wikimedia Commons, and eight executive orders of 1907 to 1929 are marked public domain, as they are.

  • Every page of the Atlas is read in a browser before a release goes live, and a release with a single problem found does not go live.
  • A sourced history for the last 63 cities and municipalities without one: all 1,642 now have one.
  • Links to Wikidata for 5,790 places, matched by their PSGC code alone.
  • For an island place with no neighbour on land, the places of its level nearest it across the water.
  • Where no source gives a figure, the page says in its place who has not published it and why.
  • Wherever a table or a list has no figure for a place, it says why in words, never with a dash.
  • A small barangay's land area to three significant figures, and its density worked out from that same figure.

Where each figure comes from, and how Scene works out the rest: Sources and methods.
